Dig this holiday vibe! Why do dogs dig on the beach?

by Pet Angels HQ on February 9, 2012

Wow it’s February already.  Just back from holidaying in Golden Bay with my family, including Winnie the giant puppy… who discovered the wonders of a beach  holiday.  There are lots of adventures to be had for a dog crossed with a horse at the beach.  Sticks to be chased, kids to chase her, a new game of run and hide the stick to be invented.

A major break through came with her puppy fear of water as she bravely tip toed out to sea to fetch a stick, then bounced back like a kangaroo each time.  Being a rather tall canine, she was able to get out quite far without ever having to get her feet off the ground.

But the strangest of all puppy beach antics was the obsessive digging.  Has anyone else seen this with a dog on the beach?  Winnie would start digging in a frenzy, spraying sand everywhere, all over us on our beach towels (thanks Winnie!).  She would dig and dig until she made a bed for herself and then lie in it.  I guess this was to keep cool?  The opposite of Huskies who dig holes in the snow to keep warm?  Whatever her purpose, she did make us laugh.   Love to hear about your pet’s holiday antics…

Ban dogs or owners???

by Pet Angels HQ on January 23, 2012

Please just take one look at this picture in this article and tell me if the problem is with the dog breed or the owner?  A dog tied up with chains heavier than its body weight.  This is not an issue with dog breed!

The best birthday present for a dog…

by Pet Angels HQ on January 20, 2012

Winnie turned 1 year old on Wednesday.  My kids were so excited and we debated at length what she would want to do on her birthday.  A trip to the dog beach, a walk to the dog exercise area, doggie lunch at dog friendly cafe Babylon on Oriental Parade?   Then I suddenly remembered, her birthday was on a Wednesday and she was off for doggy day care with Pet Angel Bill and her gang of dog friends.  Suddenly everything else seemed to fade into insignificance.  We all knew what Winnie wanted to do for her birthday … and it didn’t include us!

I’m happy to report Winnie had a fabulous birthday with Bill and five other canine pals frolicking in the bush and snoozing in the sun.  She came home exhausted and flopped on her bed with her second best present of the day… a tasty bone.

What do your pets get for their birthday?

New Year’s Resolutions for Dogs

by Pet Angels HQ on January 17, 2012

  1. I will not eat other animals’ poop
  2. I will not lick my human’s face after eating animal poop
  3. I do not need to suddenly stand straight up when I’m lying under the coffee table
  4. My head does not belong in the refrigerator
  5. I will no longer be beholden to the sound of the can opener
  6. I will take time from my busy schedule to stop and smell the behinds
  7. I will NOT chase the cat around the house knocking everything over in my way
  8. I will get a bite on that freak who gives me shots every year
  9. I will grow opposable thumbs; break into pantry; and will decide for MYSELF how much food is “too” much
  10. The garbage collector is NOT stealing our stuff
  11. I will NOT chase the stick until I see it leave my owner’s hand

What would YOUR dog(s) say are their New Year Resolutions?

Winnie and the wind

by Pet Angels HQ on January 16, 2012

Happy New Year!  It’s great to be back blogging about the wonderful world of pets again.  After two amazingly relaxing weeks of managing to find the sun in Martinborough we returned to gale force conditions in Wellington last week.  Driving down Ghuznee Street, my mother and I had to laugh at the sight of a wheelibin travelling by itself along the road, caught in a strong gust, but looking for all the world like an out of control Darlek in an old BBC Doctor Who episode.

Settling into the house after our holiday, we noticed that Winnie was acting very strangely.  She wouldn’t come upstairs and lay shaking in my son’s bedroom.  Even at dinner time, when she would normally be hanging around me giving me that hungry stare, she was not going to come upstairs.  It took me a while to work out why she was being so weird.  It was the wind!  I suddenly remembered she did the same thing last time we had a particularly windy day.   She had once encountered a flying deckchair in the garden and now has a total phobia about the wind.  I googled it and the correct term is ancraophobia… the fear of wind.  The best cure apparently is hypnotism… to re-programme the sub-concious mind.  Right then.

Anyone know a dog hypnotist??

Confess your pet’s Christmas presents….

by Pet Angels HQ on December 22, 2011

OK come on, fess up… what’s under the tree for your fur babies?  I’ll tell mine if you tell yours.  Winnie the Giant puppy has … a black leather collar with diamontes on; a new bed and a raw-hide cracker full of treats… all wrapped up, labelled and ready for Christmas morning.

That’s my confession.  What’s yours?

A poem about Happy Feet the penguin

by Pet Angels HQ on December 21, 2011

My 6 year old daughter just brought this poem home from school, with a picture she’d drawn of Happy Feet, the penguin who found himself lost on the beach in Wellington, New Zealand.  Mistaking sand for snow, Happy Feet got very sick before he was operated on at Wellington Zoo and released back into the wild.  Thought I’d share the poem … we all hope Happy Feet is surviving OK out there.  His transmitter is no longer working but we like to think he’s still alive.

Today I am not feeling well.

I feel sorry for my parents because I ran away.

I got a long way away.

It dusint smell like home.

They dont lik me

By Oleta.

Good luck Happy Feet.

Getting your dog to come when called… top tips…

by Pet Angels HQ on December 19, 2011

After my recent post about Winnie and the bird where I admitted yelling hopelessly at a willful Winnie in full flight, Lena from our Auckland North office sent me some links to some useful training tips.  Take a look… they are quite useful.

Apparently yelling “Winnie!” a hundred times at full volume doesn’t work… now I know why!  Off to focus on getting her sit….

Mystery cat takes the bus each day!

by Pet Angels HQ on December 15, 2011

Love this article in Daily Mail UK about Macavity, the cat who takes the bus by himself to the fish and chip shop each day.  Why does he do it?  And why doesn’t he get the bus back again?  Who does he belong to?  What on earth…. so many questions!  Great story.
